Hi and welcome to another episode of javing it with Javier. Let's see what we are javing today. This past Saturday after enjoying a fun filled board games night, we decided to check out John's Chinese BBQ because one of my coworkers was hyping it up so much. We ordered the BBQ pork, the eggplant with ribs, rice vermicelli with mixed vegetables, and the pork belly.

Starting off with the BBQ pork; it was lightly crisped with a soft honey taste to it. It was so utterly addicting that I had to make sure to save some for my coworkers. This one was easily my favourite dish of the night. Moving onto the eggplant with ribs, the flavour of the eggplant was refreshing and the ribs had a chewy texture to them. The vermicelli was alright. I didn't have many opinions on them. And finally the pork belly. This dish was also extremely delicious although being told that this dish was a bit underrated by my coworker. It had a strong taste to it so it's best eaten with rice. The quality of the pork belly is one of the better ones I've had.

I see a lot of online reviews saying the service here was sub par. In my opinion it was great, the waiters actually paid attention to us...at a Chinese restaurant. Or maybe it was the fact that I realized halfway through my meal that one of my coworkers was the son of the restaurant owner lol but I hope it wasn't because of that.

In terms of the atmosphere, it was what a typical Chinese restaurant would be like. There were some decorations in the front though.

Finally after trying out so many good dishes the price came out to ~$20. That is an absolute steal and I would come here again.

In conclusion, I still daydream about that BBQ pork and I can't wait to enjoy a night out with my coworkers soon. And that's it for today's episode of javing it with Javier. And remember food is life!

For mid-autumn my mom rallied our family and some friends to eat dinner. My family really enjoys the BBQ stuff here so we return about once a year to eat their pork, duck, and chicken (all pre-ordered).

    AMBIANCE: 2/5
The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night but I honestly think it's because the turn-over of tables that already left was slow. Nobody cleaned the table behind us until half way through our meal and then we had to deal with the smashing around of plates, cups, and dishes into their rolly cart. Tables were decently spaced from each other and not SUPER crowded.

    FOOD: 3/5
We ordered and the food came out quickly.
    1. BBQ Duck: AMAZING. The crispness of the skin with the fattiness of the duck was delicious. A must try
    2. Soy Sauce Chicken: Meh. The chicken was meaty but the soy sauce marinade was a little strong so it came off as really salty
    3. BBQ Pork: My family loves this. Says it's crispy on the edges and gives it a nice "grilled" taste
    4. Fried Fish with Corn: YUM. I really liked how doughy the batter was so it gave the fish a very crisp but filling bite. The corn sauce with it was average but did its job.
    5. Snow Peas: Okay - average. At least they weren't old
    6. Beef with Gai Lan (chinese broccoli?): I love the way they cook their beef. The sauce is delicious, although the dish is really oily
    7. Beef Tenderloin: Okay, SUPER chewy though.

I believe that's all we got. The table was so full that we had to place dishes on the side of the rotating platter in the middle.

    SERVICE: 1/5
Dude, I am firm believer of Chinese service. You don't have to smile at me but you should be able to serve without being rude or short.
First, I took 2 soup bowls off the rotating table because my boyfriend and I didn't want to drink the soup. When the waitress saw: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! PUT THOSE BACK ON, HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO REACH THAT?!"
Second, we wanted 4 bowls of rice. We asked one of the male waiters for them and he's like: oh I don't do that ... you have to ask one of the females. So then we waited a while to make sure we didn't hear wrong and nobody was bringing the rice. THEN we asked one of the female waiters. 1 minute later a waitress: "WHY ARE YOU ASKING FOR 8 BOWLS OF RICE? WHY DID YOU ASK HIM AND THEN NOW YOU ASK HER?" We explained the situation to her and then she left in a huff. Another waitress delivered the rice and explained that the male waiter didn't want to 'scoop rice' and then asked one of female waiters to do so.
Third, why are you throwing dishes behind my head when I am trying to eat? The (mean) waitress was cleaning up at one point and she was just muttering angry things (about her co-workers?). Like happy Mid-Autumn to you lady.

    OVERALL: 2/5
I do enjoy the food here but I'd honestly rather travel a little further than to visit here again. My parents are more old-school so they get the attitude issues but I cannot subject myself to this again. OR get take-out!

Food is good but the service is terrible. As I was paying and waiting for my change, the owner was saying to me "we did not include tips in the bill." She was super rude and I will never ever step foot in this restaurant again. I regret that I still left her a tip!!!

Full convo in canto: The guy in front of me wanted to get 1/2 a pound and she's like there is no such thing! "not gonna give u $2.50 worth of meat, u have to get more!" The poor guy is like what do you mean? You can order whatever u want man. I dont want to eat that much why can't I just get half a pound. Boss lady's like thats too little man, and no not gonna cut that for u! Its not even worth cutting... Omg that guy had it and was like ok then Im just gonna leave if you're not gonna sell it and then dipped... Wowww so much anger and fume LOL and then the funny part was I was gonna ask for the exact same thing  if I did... I think she'd blow up ahaha she was still cussing after he left and the poor employee next to her looked so embarassed!

Overall good food, especially the BBQ Pork which was really flavourful.  The Peking duck wrappings were really thin and better than most places.
